If you were among the thousands (hundreds of thousands? OK – millions) of search engine optimization professionals, webmasters, and site owners who were shocked following Google’s first release of Penguin 1.0 in 2012.the release of Google Penguin 1.0 (in 2012), well here it is again! Last year, Google released a minor version upgrade, dubbed Penguin 2.1, which was irritating, but not too damaging. But now, here comes a big release, full force Google Penguin 3.0 and the search engine optimization and SEM people are gearing up for a full onslaught. As with earlier versions, the Penguin 3.0 will impact sites that do not comply with Google’s strict website guidelines.

Google’ release was mighty stealthy and many industry pros were caught off guard. There were rumblings, but finally Google made it official making this statement, using Google+ (wow, talk about insular – like Google+ is a big news outlet):

“On Friday last week, we started rolling out a Penguin refresh affecting fewer than 1 percent of queries in U.S. English search results. This refresh helps sites that have already cleaned up the web spam signals discovered in the previous Penguin iteration, and demotes sites with newly discovered spam.

It’s a slow worldwide rollout, so you may notice it settling down over the next few weeks.”

Then Google goes on to list a number of reference articles to help explain Penguin and Google’s philosophy.

What Makes Penguin 3.0 Different?

Penguin 3.0 is said to affect 1 percent of search results. Below is the estimated impact from the previous version of Penguin from Search Engine Land:

    Penguin 1.0: 3.1 percent
    Penguin 1.1: 0.1 percent
    Penguin 1.2: 0.3 percent
    Penguin 2.0: 2.3 percent
    Penguin 2.1: 1 percent

The overall impact will be far less than the original Penguin from 2012, however, most websites have been scrambling to cleanup whatever mistakes or problems they had at that time so the only point of Penguin 3.0 has got to be a much sharper pencil and there will be many websites that just can’t make the cut.

According to an article in Forbes, Google confirmed to Forbes Magazine that Penguin 3.0 has a major twist in the algorithm that makes it much different from the 2.0 version. So, webmasters, SEO professionals, and site owners should already feel the heat from this change.

The impact will be surprisingly positive or painfully unpleasant. Penguin 3.0 will either seriously downgrade, if not entirely wipe out a website’s rankings, or it could boost a website that has made improvements. Spam style sites are in deep trouble since Penguin 3.0 seems to be geared entirely toward spammy sites.

Penguin 3.0 is going after the spam link programs in a big way. Positive linking approaches will be rewarded, while link spam will be severally punished. Google does have som recommendations to avoid linking programs and techniques:

Do not buy or sell links
Avoid too many link exchanges
Do not use to create links
Avoid links with SEO anchor text in articles or press releases
Stay away from low-quality directory or bookmark site links
Don’t use links in the footers or templates of sites on a wide scale
Don’t use forum comments with optimized links signatures and posts
